Teacher guiding student through using the SEM through remote control

Northwest Vista College (NVC), a two-year public Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI), has successfully implemented an Advanced Materials Technology workforce program that will prepare students for careers in emerging nanotechnology industries as entry-level nanotechnicians in research and development corporations, nanofabrication, nanobiology/agriculture, nanomedicine, nanoelectronics, and nanomaterials. The vision of AIM-TEC is to act as a regional hub to: 1) support the educational preparation of next generation technicians with 21st century knowledge and skills in micro-nano-bio technologies; 2) strengthen the transition points from high school to college, and college to workforce and/or advanced education through innovative student recruitment and retention strategies, and; 3) expand community awareness of nanotechnology benefits, current and potential impacts, and the various educational and career pathways available in diverse crosscutting fields.

The program will give graduates the knowledge, skills, and abilities to operate a variety of nanofabrication equipment, understand scientific principles and the behavior of matter at the atomic level in chemical, as well as biological and molecular systems.

This course of study prepares students for a career in the field of Nanotechnology and material science. Graduate students are employed as entry-level manufacturing operators, test technicians, and materials technicians. Graduate students can also continue their education towards a bachelor’s degree. The Advanced Materials Technology Program offers comprehensive infrastructure of advanced fabrication & characterization tools, including but not limited to Scanning Electron Microscopy, Atomic Force Microscopy, Zeta Potential Sizer, Electrospinning and FTIR.
